Week 10

Week 10 down!

Well, this post will not be as long as previous ones due to my observance all week. It was strange to go back to my placement on Tuesday morning after the big farewell party last Friday. I was received with a warm welcome, though, so that eased my anxiety.  I spent time in the third grade social studies class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Just my luck, they were working on geography skills! The students were working on locating the 7 continents, the 5 major oceans, and beginning the United States. I still have the world and United States floor puzzle in my trunk, so I pulled those out for the students to manipulate. They enjoyed it as much as my 5th graders did, of course it was much harder for them to complete. Speaking of my fifth graders, I was observing in the third grade class because it's on the other side of the building, and I was kind of hiding from them. I got busted on Thursday, though. I just told them I'm hanging out a little longer due to the CPS strike. They were excited though, and asked me to come back to teach them.

On Thursday, I observed the reading specialist. That was actually super interesting. She was working with the students on how to spot key words in a sentence to get the main idea of what the text was trying to say. On Friday, I was able to a meeting with the administrator about a student with behavior issues.  It was a teacher/parent/ administrator meeting team meeting This student has gotten into serious trouble with three in-school suspensions since the beginning of the school year. The team was discussing his behavior over the course of the last couple of month, and next steps that the school will take if the behavior continues. That was interesting to see from a parent's perspective. I was so sad for the dad. He really has no idea how to get through to his son.

Well, CTU is still on strike, so CPS does not have school today. The administrator wanted to wait a couple more days before discussing putting me back in a classroom/ She is hesitant to do that yet because she does not want to disrupt the students or cooperating teacher's routine if I teach for a day or two, and then move over to the high school.

Signing off,
Lisa P.

  1. Lisa, despite the strike it seems like you are at least having some valuable experiences. I agree that putting you back in the classroom at the same school probably isn't the best idea (if the strike doesn't last too long). Hopefully it gets resolved soon and you can move to your next placement.
